Before Applixure
- A hybrid model with a visibility gap in the middle. Peikko managed its environment partly through an external service provider and partly in-house, but neither side had a tool to show how computers were actually performing, or an overview of the environment as a whole.
- Random issues, no way to resolve them. "We had a lot of random weird things happening with the computers, which had a lot to do with the history of how computers had been managed," says Lasse Puoskari, CIO at Peikko Group.
- The CIO's own laptop was part of the problem. Lasse's computer crashed periodically. Tickets bounced straight to onsite support, who didn't have the tools to figure out what was actually wrong. "The big problem was that we were not getting the most out of our computers because we didn't really know what was going on with them."
Why Peikko Chose Applixure
Lasse had used Applixure in a previous role and knew it could help, both with the employee experience side and with surfacing other useful information about the environment. Peikko ran a pilot on 200 computers first. "It was very soon clear that this information would be very useful," Lasse says. For his team, who hadn't seen the tool before, it was something else entirely: "It was really a very eye-opening experience: we could easily see what computers we had and what software was running on them, who was using what software and with what kinds of rights, and what kinds of issues were going on with the computers and software."
What Changed
- The team could see exactly where to take action. "The aha moment for my team came when they could see how clearly and visually Applixure presents the issues that are reasonably easy for us to fix," Lasse says. Fixing a problem visibly moves the environment's score, a direct, trackable link between action and improvement.
- Adoption was smooth, despite real concerns about timing. With significant organisational change already underway, Lasse worried about how the team would take on yet another new tool. "Analytics is so intuitive and easy to use, and the benefits are so clear, that adoption went really smoothly... I wish everything had gone as smoothly as taking Applixure into use did."
- Quick wins on installation and licensing. Peikko improved how they install computers and addressed a build-up of old operating systems and software versions, harmonising operating systems and Microsoft packages across the fleet.
- Issues surfaced that nobody knew existed. Beyond the problems Peikko was already aware of, Analytics revealed issues the team hadn't previously known about.
- Workflow is the next step. Peikko plans to take Applixure Workflow into use, which will turn Analytics data automatically into assigned tasks for the IT team, reducing firefighting further as the current backlog of newly visible issues gets worked through.
In Their Own Words
"We had a lot of random, weird things happening with the computers, which had a lot to do with the history of how computers had been managed. We had been working in this hybrid model where things were partly done by an external partner and partly done in-house. The big problem was that we were not getting the most out of our computers because we didn't really know what was going on with them."
